Gary Sinise is a well-known actor who has starred in Forrest Gump as Lt. Dan, many different CSI television series as Mac Taylor and has won many different awards. Many of the awards Sinise has won have been for his amazing acting skills, but not every award was won on a sound stage. In fact, Gary Sinise has won numerous medals and awards for his good deeds done off the stage. Each award and medal acts as a form of inspiration for others to follow in his footsteps and do good.

The Works of Gary Sinise

Sinise has become somewhat of a household name thanks to his amazing performances in some of the most iconic movies. Forrest Gump is one of those movies and in it, Sinise played Lt. Dan. Beyond Forrest Gump, Sinise also played in the movie adaptation of Of Mice and Men, Apollo 13, The Green Mile, and Reindeer Games. After a successful career on the big screen, Sinise moved to the small screen where he guest starred on CSI: Miami, Crime Scene Investigation and finally, a recurring role on CSI: NY. However, some of Sinise’s best roles may not have been played on the big screen or small screen. Instead, Sinise inspired the world through his acts of good deeds.

Lt. Dan Band and Beyond

Sinise used one of his most popular roles to help military men and women while overseas. He has taken part in more than 40 tours and made over 150 appearances for the USO with the Lt. Dan Band. Sinise has traveled to Alaska, Kuwait, Iraq, Afghanistan, Germany, Belgium, UK, Netherlands, Italy UAE Qatar, Korea, Singapore, and so many more places. During each stop, Sinise has helped boost morale and inspired hundreds of troops and their families.

After all of his travels, Sinise started Operation International Children. The organization works with schools, and other businesses here in the US to supply troops with school supply kits, blankets, backpacks, shoes, Arabic language books and sports equipment for the children in conflict areas. The list of organizations that Sinise has raised funds for is long and includes American Humane Association, DAV, Gary Sinise Foundation, H.O.M.E., Hope for the Warriors, My Good Deed, Operation Homefront, Operation International Children, Project A.L.S., United Service Organization, and the Wounded Warrior Project.

Due to all of the good Gary has done for our troops, their families and even those in conflicted areas, he has been given many awards and honors. One of the most recognizable awards Sinise has been given is the Presidential Citizens Medal. As a civilian, the Presidential Citizens Medal is the second highest medal one can receive in the US. Sinise is the second actor and one of only 110 people throughout history to receive this medal. However, that medal is not the only medal Sinise has received. In fact, he has been awarded the Medal of Honor’s Bob Hope Excellence in Entertainment Award, The Spirit of the USO Award, The Ellis Island Medal of Honor, The Harry S. Truman Good Neighbor Award, and the Heart of a Patriot Award.

Gary Sinise is a shining beacon that we should all aim to imitate. His acts of good have benefited thousands of people and his awards are but a small token of appreciation from the US. It’s up to us how we do good in the world, and not everyone will be awarded a medal. But that’s no reason to stop trying to do something good for someone else.
